Dark Gray

This is the dresser from the bedroom set my parents bought as newlyweds in 1956. It was made by a company called Kent Coffey which was located in North Carolina and is part of their "The Saratoga" collection. It is made of mahogany wood as you can see by the photo of the interior with the drawers out. The drawers are assembled with dovetail joints, an indication of quality construction. I have up-cycled it to appeal to a more modern aesthetic: First I painted it with two coats of BIN shellac-based primer to prevent any bleed-through. Then I applied two coats of Rustoleum Chalked paint in Charcoal with a high density foam roller. Finally I sealed it with 2 coats of crystal clear matte Varathane Ultimate Polyurethane applied with a polyester brush. To add some visual interest to the top surface, I did a light/dark streak effect. The hardware is original and has been hand painted by brush with the BIN shellac, a metallic silver paint, and then the polyurethane.

Midcentury Charcoal Gray Dresser

This is the dresser my parents bought for my bedroom when I was born in the 1950's. It was made by the McGraw-Edison furniture company of New London, Wisconsin. I have up-cycled it to a Barbiecore aesthetic: First I applied two coats of BIN shellac-based primer. The body of the dresser was painted in Behr high gloss white enamel applied with a high density foam roller. The drawer fronts were done with Behr Marquee Satin finish in Heart Breaker, also applied with the foam roller. (Please check Behr's website or Home Depot's color chips for the exact color of Heart Breaker as sometimes photos do not give the truest color representation.) The original hardware was updated with spray paint: first the BIN shellac, then metallic gold Rustoleum, and finally a coat of clear Krylon. The original back and bottom were in poor condition, so I replaced them with brand new 1/8" plywood and attached the back with screws, as opposed to the original staples which were prone to pop out. The top drawer has a cute plastic tray to hold little things like jewelry, etc.

This nightstand is from my parents' first bedroom set when they were married in 1956. It is a fine quality piece of mid century mahogany furniture from the manufacturer Kent-Coffey "The Saratoga" collection. The drawers have dovetailed joints. It is 26-1/4 inches high, 20 inches wide, and 15 inches deep. The top drawer is 2-1/4 inches deep, the center shelf area is 9-3/4 inches high and the bottom drawer is 4-1/4 inches deep. It has been primed with 2 coats of white shellac based primer to prevent bleed through, then painted with a coat of light gray paint, and followed by 2 coats of Martha Stewart Living metallic silver specialty paint. The original knobs have been replaced with clear faceted glass balls for that extra touch of movie-star glamour. The horizontal surfaces (top and shelf) have been given 2 coats of satin polyurethane for extra durability.

This is one of a pair of end tables that my parents purchased in 1970 for our den. I have painted them in a fun statement color. They have been primed with 2 coats of shellac based white primer, followed by 3 coats of a high gloss enamel in a custom mixed turquoise. The paint was applied with a brush and gone over with a foam roller for a smooth finish. The drawer front insets were painted in a gloss black enamel. There are some scratches on the metal trim strips on the front of the drawer. The table is 20 inches high, 25 inches wide and 25-1/4inches deep. The drawer is 5-3/4 inches deep.

My mother purchased this table new when we moved into our newly-built house in 1969. I believe she found it in a furniture store in Elizabeth, NJ. It is gold-painted wood in what looks to me like a Louis XVI style. The top looks to be gold leaf which is covered by a piece of glass.
