Seller's Notes:Amphora Antiquity Dates from the Roman Period ~ Herodian Phase 37 BC to Early 3rd Century AD "Dates to approximately 1st to 2nd Century A.D. ( perhaps earlier ) Found in Israel, in the area just north of Jerusalem, which is rich in architectural antiquities. It was used as a water jar, remains in good condition, with a red-brick color, and aged from its burial beneath Middle Eastern sands for thousands of years" I purchased this Amphora in the early 1980s from Antiquarium, Ltd, Fine Ancient Arts Gallery on Madison Avenue in New York City. It comes with a Certificate Of Authenticity along with documentation and materials referencing similar amphoras that are part of prestigious international collections including the Israeli Museum ( Jerusalem ); The Ha'aretz museum of Ceramics ( Tel Aviv ) the Jewish Museum ( NYC ) and the Metropolitan Museum of Art ( NYC ) "Antiquarium has specialized in the sale of highest quality authentic antiquities from the Classical, Egyptian and Near Eastern worlds since 1979. Works of art from Antiquarium compliment the collections of many of the world's finest museums and most prestigious academic institutions. All items are sold with certificates of authenticity and extensive documentation, including historical and cultural background, comparanda from published international collections and provenance. Our extensive collections are always evolving, and include museum-quality works of art in stone, bronze, pottery, glass and gold from ancient civilizations ranging from the ancient Near East and Egypt to the Greek, Etruscan, Roman, Byzantine, Islamic, Medieval and Renaissance worlds."
